Musicity TYO
Tokyo, March - April 2012

Musicity is a location-based, curated music platform that explores the intersection of music, place, memory and experience. Through smart phones, audiences can visit various locations to hear and download exclusive tracks.

The British Council launched Musicity TYO in March 2012 in Ropppongi, Tokyo as part of the major arts festival 'Roppongi Art Night'. We have commissioned 13 British and Japanese artists, including Nitin Sawhney, Fink, Ghostpoet and Stuart McCallum (The Cinematic Orchestra) from the UK, to compose original music in response to a building or location in Roppongi. Fink's contribution to Musicity is in collaboration with the singing synthesizer application Hatsune Miku - a hugely successful virtual pop star in Japan.

The programme aims to inspire people to see the urban fabric in new ways, encouraging them to explore the city musically, architecturally and experientially.

To celebrate the launch of Musicity Tokyo, a special talk and DJ session was livestreamed on 22 March via one of the most popular Ustream programmes Dommune, and special live performances were presented on 24 and 25 March at the Roppongi Art Night.

Musicity was first launched in 2010 in London by music curator Nick Luscombe and creative strategist Simon Jordan (founder of Jump Studios). From 2012 onward, the platform is due to take place in various cities worldwide including Singapore, Berlin, and Oslo.
