Scottish Opera For All

Scottish Opera For All (SOFA) was created in 1971 as the Education Department of Scottish Opera, making it the oldest education and outreach unit of any opera house in Europe. Since its inception, SOFA has developed a unique programme of performance-based projects and workshops to cater for a wide cross-section of the community, both at home and abroad.

SOFA operates a series of opera programmes linked directly to Scottish Opera's repertoire, which gives participants the chance to observe every aspect involved in staging a full-scale opera for the public.

SOFA tours its new primary schools project FEVER! to Scotland's primary schools from October 2004 to June 2005. There are three stages to the tour. Two months before the workshop takes place, a comprehensive teachers' support pack, including music lyrics and a guide vocals CD, is distributed to the school. Then two weeks prior to the workshop, a SOFA Music Specialist will visit the school to prepare and practice songs. During the morning of the workshop, SOFA's highly skilled and experienced musicians, singers and drama specialists will spend time rehearsing with pupils in preparation for the afternoon performance.

SOFA has also been running Expressive Arts Classes, designed to make learning about opera fun, for seven years. The classes are specifically tailored for children and young people aged 3-14 years old.
