The London Philharmonic Orchestra's (LPO) education programme was established in 1987 and every year reaches in excess of five hundred schools and fifteen thousand pupils, delivering over one hundred and seventy workshops and performances. Education and outreach work is a fundamental element of the LPO's policy. The programme is delivered through the LPO players, together with a range of experienced musicians and composers.
The LPO’s work endeavours to promote a collaborative, multi-artform approach, seeking ways to deliver music throughout the curriculum and actively seeking innovative approaches to working in a range of educational environments.
The programme includes the following activities: Bright Sparks Schools Concerts and workshops led by players from the LPO, supported by teacher sessions and teacher packs;
FUNHarmonics family concerts; Roots, a day long musical extravaganza; SoundBytes, a programme of practical workshops devised through the orchestra's Audience Development programme; and large-scale community performance projects.
Tailor made residencies with schools and venues include Subversive Symphonies, which will work together with Slough schools and Creative Partnership Slough team. LPO also aims to deliver at least one international education project per year.
Renga!, an ensemble comprising LPO players and musicians from other musical genres, has produced projects with musicians including jazz bass guitarist Ronan Guilfoyle, Open Ear Orchestra, and musicians from across genres working together with LPO players to compose and play their own music.
