The London Mozart Players Education and Community Programme started in 1989 in Croydon, where the orchestra is resident. It now extends throughout the UK and involves almost every member of the orchestra.
Starting with music and stories for the pre-school age-group, the programme for children goes right through the age ranges including special needs, and explores music through workshops and performances appropriate to each age group. Children are actively involved in creative music-making and dance projects, and older pupils also participate in masterclasses and instrumental coaching. The London Mozart Players continues to develop its pioneering work in out-of-school clubs with Make a Disc, a project for 11-16 year-olds to make recordings of their own music. A major orchestral concert for primary schools in Croydon is a feature of each summer term.
For its community outreach programme, small groups of musicians visit a huge range of venues, including day-care centres, hospices, residential and nursing homes, to give informal concerts and meet the residents and members.
