Icebreaker is one of few amplified ensembles on the musical scene in the UK. No other ensemble comprises such a wide variety of instruments (including panpipes, wind synthesiser, saxophones, electric violin and electric cello).
Icebreaker has a repertoire that is not explored by other ensembles and as such presents programmes that constantly educate audiences. It gives composer workshops enabling young composers to write a specific style of music for a group of instrumentalists that they would not normally have the opportunity to exploit. Open rehearsals and pre-concert talks are normally given for works receiving their first performance.
Workshops have included Belfast (Sonorities Festival), London (The Warehouse with Gordon McPherson, Diderik Wagenaar and students from London music colleges), a large-scale public education project at the South Bank Centre and the Dartington International Summer School, as well as schools workshops in New York City high schools.
