Formed in 1984, the Delta Saxophone Quartet (DSQ) is one of the UK's most enterprising and adventurous contemporary music ensembles. The quartet aims to present and record new British and international 'cutting edge' contemporary music in a dynamic and informative manner.
Over the last twenty years the DSQ has developed its own innovative education projects, encouraging thousands of people of all ages and abilities to share in the unique experience of group improvisation and composition. These workshops have been much in demand with re- bookings in Aberdeen and Austria plus further projects at The Blackheath Halls, London; Kettles Yard, Cambridge; St George’s, Bristol; the Lakeside Arts centre, Nottingham and on their 2003 tour of Taiwan.
The quartet made a ground breaking British Council tour of Uzbekistan in 2002, performing in Tashkent, Ferghana (the first European group to perform there for 25 years) and Samarkand. Other performances were given in Austria, Moscow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, London, Southend and Cambridge.
In April/May 2003 the quartet made a return visit to Taiwan for a three week tour of the island, sponsored by the British Council and Total Arts Management Taiwan.
In recent years the quartet has performed in Berlin, Brandenburg, Tashkent and at the Huddersfield Festival.
Early in 2006 it will join forces with the Britten Sinfonia and tour a programme which will include a new commission from the British composer Gavin Bryars.
The quartet has been made ensemble in residence at Kingston University for 2003-2005. The professional work of the quartet will be combined with creating and recording works by the music students at this leading UK University.
