New Writing

New Writing is an annual anthology of new literature in English from the UK and the Commonwealth. Find out more about previous and upcoming editions, details of submission along with teachers' and readers' notes.

Creative Reading

Learn more about leading UK and Commonwealth contemporary writers and discover the best of UK and Commonwealth literature. Browse through our Contemporary Writers website, find a list of specialist bibliographies on our enCompass Culture website, and have a look at Writers and their Work.

Children and Young People's Literature

T Books has 100 teenage literature titles selected by the Reading Agency. We have various children and teenage booklists on the enCompassCulture website along with the Magic Pencil website of children's book illustrators.

Recent Publications

In 2007 we published a Children's Illustrated Literature bibliography, New Writing 15, and project websites for Power in the Voice and the MediCafe. Please also see the News page for forthcoming information.

Literary Translation

In partnership with the British Centre for Literary Translation we have a dedicated Literary Translation website designed to celebrate the art of translation. The site contains details of events, workshops, background information and theory, and links to further resources.

Reading Kits for Teachers

The Writers and Their Work series provides in-depth overviews of the literary lives and work of UK authors. For younger readers we have a reader development Reading Kit.

Literature Matters

Literature Matters is our departmental newsletter that is now distributed as an e-zine. It is published online with news about British Council events and publications including articles and interviews with authors.

Poetry

The British Council project, Poetry Quartets, in partnership with Bloodaxe Books, consists of a series of contemporary poetry recordings featuring poets reading and talking about their work. We are also involved with the Poems on the Underground project - the poems are distributed to our overseas offices.
