Reading Kit

The materials contained within this Reading Kit are intended to make young people exploring contemporary British literature, perhaps for the first time, enjoy themselves and think about what they are reading. The kit was produced as part of a collaborative project instigated by the Hungarian Ministry of Education and coordinated by Gabriella Gulyas at the British Council Hungary.

The kit provides session plans for 20 Reading Circle meetings: 10 dealing with the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon, and 10 covering the novel Refugee Boy by Benjamin Zephaniah. The plans were created through the cooperation of 34 secondary school teachers of English from all over Hungary as part of a 30-hour professional development course on extensive reading. Each novel was divided into 10 sections and pairs of teachers were assigned the task of developing a session plan. The completed session plans have been rigorously edited, supplemented and extended to avoid repetition and provide variety.
