A select bibliography of new fiction from the UK 1999 – 2001 Selected by Catriona Ferguson
Eyes Wide Open offers an overview of some of the freshest, liveliest and most innovative writing to be published in between 1999 and 2001. It is a diverse selection which shows the range and the breadth of contemporary UK writing. It exposes the rich mix of cultures contributing to contemporary literature, outlines the themes currently preoccupying authors, and reflects recent trends in publishing.
An emphasis has been placed upon showcasing newer and younger authors, especially those who are producing exciting work but, as yet, have a lower international profile than their more famous counterparts. At the same time, the innovation and continuing influence of such established figures as Jim Crace, Hanif Kureishi and Jeanette Winterson have not been ignored.
Each entry has full bibliographic details (author, title, publisher, date of publication and ISBN) plus an annotation. It is divided into the following sections each with a short introduction: Remember when; Goodies and baddies; Flying solo; Word games; Friends and family; and On the margins. It is illustrated with photographs of authors and book jackets. Now out of print but available here online (see the links on the left) and the titles are all listed on the enCompassCulture web site. A new edition is being compiled covering the years 2001 to 2003 which will be available in Spring 2004.
