The project is for one year’s R&D, leading to further work, to examine BC supported arts education projects across the region. The survey will incorporate impact and sustainability of individual projects.

The overall aim of the project is to produce a report presenting an overview of current best-practice in work in this areathroughout the region and to present a strategy for a three year funding programme to support this work.

Bio-ethics Project - Austria

Linking literature, information services, science and performance poetry.

House of Science and Literature - Germany

  • A programme of readings, talks and films that ran alongside the Berlin International Literature Festival in September 2003.
  • Aimed to explore the links between science and literature.
  • A series of readings took place, featuring writers whose work contains elements of scientific research.
  • There were also a number of debates, including 'Science and Fiction' - a discussion with scientists and writers and talks with science writers from leading science publications in Germany.
  • British Council in Berlin.

Identity and Diversity in Switzerland: multicultural youth and creative writing

  • Lierature/civil society project working with representatives of Diasporas in Switzerland and with young Swiss.
  • Creating spaces for them to work together ina eries of workshops encouraging expression in writing lead by UK writers.

Imagine This - Poland

  • British Fantasy and Science Fiction: aimed at increasing awareness of contemporary UK writing for a wider audience, providing better access and encouragement to read in English. Through reading groups, workshops, book exhibitions, an online forum, live author chats online, film shows, talks and workshops with science fiction and science fact visiting authors (Stephen Baxter, Terry Pratchett, Gwyneth Jones, Michael Marshall Smith, Susana Clarke).
  • (First in a series to run in collaboration with Polish publishers and bookshops - followed by Faces and Places 2005/6)

Klandestini: Emerging Mediterranean Writers

  • One year creative writing project for writers from Malta, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey and Italy, to improve their skills, enhance networking, encourage better reading.
  • Creation of creative writing and reading workshops in secondary schools.

The Lion, the Witch and the Reading Group - Finland

Expanding Finnish teenagers' knowledge of contemporary UK and UK literature through:

  • developing reading groups for English language teachers in Finnish secondary schools
  • introducing contemporary literature into the ELT curriculum for 16 - 18 year-olds.

Poetry and literature festival - Estonia

At the Baltic Book fair:

  • Welsh-Estonian performance poetry
  • exhibition of English, Welsh and Scottish poetry
  • video clips of performance poetry
  • access to Contemporary Writers web site
