Teaching Literature: Literature, Language and Culture
Introduction to Literature, Language and Culture by John McRae

English is a subject which, in the way it is studied, learned and taught, is in constant change.
Since English literature became a university degree subject, in the later decades of the nineteenth century, literature and language have often been taught separately, rather than as closely related subjects. This reflected an old divide between the philological strand (language) and the more aesthetic or philosophical strand represented by the study of literature.
Literature has often been seen as an uplifting study, life-enhancing, imbued with moral values and more than a little propaganda value.
