International Young Performing Arts Entrepreneur 2008

IYPAE finalists came together in the UK for a 14 day tour in late July and early August 2008. The British Council organised group and individual meetings to introduce the finalists to fellow performing arts entrepreneurs, senior industry figures and exemplary initiatives, and also to provide them with an overview of the sector in the UK. The tour concluded in a visit to Edinburgh where the awards ceremony was held and Colombian Gabriel Zapata was declared the winner. In a charged acceptance speech, a visibly suprised but delighted Zapata, praised his fellow finalists and thanked the British Council for presenting them all with a wonderful opportunity.

The judges' praised Gabriel's entrepreneurial flair and his acute understanding of the problems and opportunities in the Colombian performing arts sector, and applaud his skill and commitment in motivating artists towards a commercially efficient practice without compromising their artistic objectives.

Chair of the judges, Sally Cowling, told the audience of leading representatives of Scotland's performing arts community that it had been a difficult decision, because the calibre of the finalists was so high. Because of this the judges also made two special commendations, to Adham Hafez, from Egypt, and to Omar Rajeh, from Lebanon.

Zapata wins the IYPAE trophy and £7,500 which he will spend on a performing arts project which extends relations between the UK and Colombia.

Background

The International Young Performing Arts Entrepreneur (IYPAE) award is a new award from the British Council, the sixth international award within its Young Creative Entrepreneur programme.

IYPAE highlights the contribution that entrepreneurs in the sector make to the development of their country’s performing arts scene, both through their championing of talented actors, designers, directors and writers and through their understanding of the market. The British Council recognises that only a strong, vibrant and diverse national performing arts sector can develop the local talent that a local market demands.

The award seeks to champion and celebrate the importance of creative entrepreneurs working in the performing arts sector, as well as showcasing international innovation in performing arts promotion, management and business development. The award programme provides the finalists with an insight into the UK sector and stimulates opportunities for collaboration. It will also draw attention to the UK's role as a global centre and nexus for cultural, creative and commercial exchange.

IYPAE08 was delivered with the support of Arts Council England, West Midlands and Scottish Arts Council.
