Living Together
Two elderly women, one sitting in bed. A gathering of children around a pot of soup. Both pictures by Rafail Shakirov

Living Together is a visual arts project with photographers from UK, Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. We started it last year by sending two young photographers from each country to a workshop in Georgia with  UK photographer Ann Doherty.  Afterwards the participants took photos in Marneuli, a region of Georgia where all three nations live together.

There is conflict in the region, especially between Armenia and Azerbaijan, so this is socially speaking, a very important project.  The photographs capture public and private, old and young and the differing mixtures of values that exist side by side in Marneuli, underlining that it is possible for their differing cultures to co-exist.

This is a continuation of Ann Doherty’s photo exhibition: South Caucasus, a Common Humanity which we organised in January 2003.

The exhibition of photographs will be opened in November/December 2004 in all three countries and in the UK in March 2005. We are also planning to announce a competition for short stories to accompany the photos.  All will appear in a catalogue some time after the exhibition.
