Cannes Film Festival
14 - 24 May 2008

Although the media made much of British films not being represented in the main competition, British film showing ‘off-competition’ made a big impact, including Hunger by Steve McQueen (shown in ‘Un Certain Regard’) winning the prize across the festival for best first film (Camera D’or).

The British Council provided travel grants to the producers of Soi Cowboy and Love You More, allowing them to attend the festival. Love You More, directed by Sam Taylor-Wood also received money from us to have a print made - a must at Cannes which strictly demands a 35mm print for showing - if films don’t have one then they are withdrawn from selections.

As usual we ran the main Information Desk in the UK Film Centre, which is the first port of call for anyone interested about any aspect of the UK film industry. This year we found a lot of interest from people with projects abroad wanting information on co-productions with British producers. The UK Film Centre hosted various panel discussions on topics such as ‘How to Qualify as a British Film’, a breakfast session with Digital Departures, about their micro-budget feature filmmaking initiatives and 'Minority Films For Majority Audiences'  looking at the place of black and minority ethnic film makers within the British film arena.

Our key Film Centre partners are: UK Film Council, Scottish Screen, BFI, Northwest Vision and Media, with contributing sponsors Film London, EM Media, Screen Yorkshire, Scenario Films and FDMX (Film and Digital Media Exchange).
