European Film Promotion

The British Council Film Department represents the UK as part of European Film Promotion (EFP). This is a network of European promotion and export agencies established in 1997 to promote and market European cinema - and the talent behind it - throughout the world. The UK (British Screen) was one of the 10 founding members of EFP. The British Council took over the role as the UK's official member of EFP in 1998.

Shooting Stars

Shooting Stars is about identifying emerging acting talent - 'twinkles' on the cusp of becoming internationally known. Since 1998 Shooting Stars has presented upcoming actors from around Europe at Berlin International Film Festival. Many have gone on to become sought after names in cinema.

For 2009 the British Council has chosen Carey Mulligan to represent the UK. She has shown real promise in her early film (Pride and Prejudice, And When Did You Last See Your Father) and TV work (My Boy Jack), which has now been fully realised. Carey has four films coming out in 2009 (two of screened at Sundance in January 2009 - An Education and The Greatest).
