'The Builder's Association and moti roti sought thoughtful and innovative approaches to all of the aspects of the residency and performances. ... the UK's position in the field of contemporary theater and performance can only be strengthened by successful collaborative projects such as Alladeen.'
Philip Bither, Curator, Performing Arts, Walker Art Center
In April 2003, through support from the British Council, motiroti - a unique multimedia performance group based in London - presented the American debut of their new collaborative project with the New York-based live art group, The Builders Association.
Alladeen is inspired by the early central Asian legends of Aladdin, the later South Asian incarnations, and the more recent Anglo-American versions of Aladdin including the Hollywood 'flying carpet' genre.
Alladeen is a crossmedia performance, a web project, and an MTV-Asia music video. The performance combines electronic music, new video systems, an architectural set, and live performance. While touching on the fantastical moments in the story of Aladdin, it also looks at the contemporary phenomenon of international call centers where primarily Indian operators often 'pass' as American.
moti roti provided striking political insights with humor and elegance about contemporary life in the global community. Many audience members commented that they have a stronger sense of the globalizing forces at work in the U.K., and have an increased appreciation for the complexity and promise of cross-cultural, cross-platform collaboration.
The show's huge success was picked up in the media, with The Chicago Reader naming Alladeen as a Critic’s Choice, The Daily Herald included the performance in the 'Best of City' placement and UR Chicago including it in Critic’s Pick theater section.
