In June 2002 the Picture This: Contemporary Illustration From London exhibition toured to Caracas, Venezuela. Marion Deuchars, a UK illustrator, accompanied the exhibition and gave a lecture at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Caracas Sofía Imber on the increasing use of illustration by design firms. She also led a three day illustration workshop with students from the Instituto de Diseño Caracas where illustration has been growing in popularity as an academic course of study. In the last three years the British Council in Venezuela has registered increasing interest in British design. Design exhibitions such as UK Styling, Satellites of Fashion and Millennium Products have all recently visited Venezuela. Product designer Paul Priestman and stylist NJ Stevenson have accompanied these projects, leading workshops and discussions on UK design practice and sharing knowledge with Venezuelan designers, students and local designers. As a result of the success of these activities graphic design, industrial design and fashion have become priority areas of work for the British Council in Caracas. Marion teaches at the Royal College of Art in London and has a wide and varied client list including Levis, Marks & Spencer, BT, Saachi & Saachi and the Royal Mail.
