The Design Department, in conjunction with the Communications Department and Geographical Directorates commissioned architects Cottrell + Vermeulen to produce a limited edition Golden Jubilee Souvenir We invited several designers to enter a competition to design a souvenir celebrating the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. For many of the designers this was something well outside their usual line of work. Our brief generated a collection of humorous and clever designs and some witty interpretations of classic gifts. The entries included a bejewelled crown-shaped tea cosy by graphic designers Daddy Design, a 50" ruler by product designers Jam; a perspex pencil holder with an interpretation of the UK’s flag by architects Adjaye Associates and a screen saver incorporating statistics and information about the Queen’s past 50 years from the architects Urban Salon. Architects Cottrell & Vermeulen won the competition with their re-modeling of the classic souvenir snow shaker into a globe showing the Commonwealth, complete with golden snow. The souvenir was put into limited production and is available to all our British Council offices to be given as a gift during the year to mark the Golden Jubilee.
