Fix - 'In a cascading chain reaction of narrative motion, this explosive new solo work draws its energy from Sufism’s whirling dervishes and the search for an innovative, chemical fusion of sound, light and movement.' The Stage
Rush - 'A purely abstract work inspired by the observation of paragliders in "freefall‚" a physical state between tremendous speed and serene stillness.' The Stage
Kaash - 'A multi-dimensional beauty and knife-edge focus that deem it one of the most hypnotic dance experiences on offer.' The Stage
The Asia-Pacific tour by award-winning British dance sensation Akram Khan fused classical Indian Kathak with contemporary dance to create a new and innovative movement language, which he describes as ‘Contemporary Kathak’. Royal Festival Hall choreographer in residence, Akram Khan, has worked together with the celebrated talents of Anish Kapoor (world renowned sculptor and set designer) and Nitin Sawhney (multi-award winning composer) to produce a series of highly original modern dance performances, Kaash, Loose in Flight, Fix and Rush which were presented in Australia, China and Taiwan from August to October 2002.
The British Council stage-managed the tour arrangements in conjunction with their local overseas offices including organising a group of 40 student alumni (Chinese students who had studied in the UK) to attend the opening night.
Beijing Modern Dance Company offered free rehearsal space. Two events were held at their studio: a question and answer session and short demonstration for Beijing dance professionals and a masterclass for the members of Beijing Modern Dance Company. Akram was impressed by the dancers and has invited one of the dancers, Jin Zi, to perform with the company in the future.
The performances were excellently received and attracted the best media coverage of all arts events that year in Taiwan. The workshops were in huge demand and we were forced to audition students for the limited number of places. Following a very successful masterclass with the dancers of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, Akram Khan and Taiwanese artist Lin Huai-min are exploring the possibility of a collaboration in 2004. Kaash has since been selected by the French magazine Les Inrockuptibles as the best dance show in France in 2002.
