'By investing in the cultural leaders of tomorrow we are investing in our shared future' Martin Davidson, Chief Executive British Council
Throughout Europe and across the world, the cultural sector is growing both in complexity and importance. It is now, during rapidly-changing and unstable times, that the cultural sector has a unique and vital role to play, the nurturing of creativity and innovation contributing immensely to social and economic development.
History has taught us that in tough economic times, the risk that nations become drawn towards isolationist and protectionist ideologies increases dramatically. It is therefore vitally important that we continue to encourage common understanding and co-operation between cultures, and seek out news ways of building mutually beneficial relationships. The cultural sector provides a unique channel for this, and by investing in the cultural leaders of tomorrow we are investing in our shared future. It is therefore crucial that the next generation of cultural leaders is nurtured and developed, to ensure the cultural sector progresses and remains relevant to wider society.
Cultural Leadership International (CLI) is a programme to develop the skills of a global network of cultural leaders. CLI awardees selected to take part in the programme are given support to acquire leadership skills and vision through a wide range of developmental opportunities including training, work placements, mentoring, international networking and exchanges of ideas and knowledge. Each participant designs their own individual development plan, tailoring a programme of activities to meet their development needs. It is envisaged that through the programme awardees will develop new ideas for strengthening the cultural sector and engaging in more international collaboration.
There are 33 participants involved in this pilot year, from Western Europe, North America, North Africa and the Middle East. These mid-career professionals include artists, curators, producers, performers, photographers, architects, artistic directors and programmers. Some of them work freelance, others within large arts organisations. All have the talent and commitment to make a difference within their societies.

The CLI pilot year (April 2009 – March 2010) engages with partners and participants across the UK, Western Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and North America. We currently have 33 participants from 27 countries enrolled in the programme. We will continue to develop our network of cultural leaders next year and to expand to other countries.
