The CLI programme is a new British Council project which will seek to identify the next generation of emerging international cultural leaders and help them to develop their skills and talent. Each participant will engage in their own personal development programme, designed specifically for their needs; activities will include: training, work based placements, networking opportunities, creative collaborations and mentoring.
It is hoped that through the personal development of the programme a new generation of arts and cultural practitoners will be able to develop the necessary leadership skills and vision to push the cultural and arts sector forward, using innovation and creative collaboration.
The programme will aim to develop a large-scale international network of cultural and arts leaders, who through their combined passion and drive, will be influential in shaping an open, tolerant and integrated society.
Unfortunately all the participants for this year’s pilot programme have now been selected. Participant applications were made through a nomination process in which British Council staff worked with partner organisations to identify a number of potential participants per country. Applicants then entered a competitive interview-based selection process, before finally being chosen for participation on the programme. We aim to have the application process for next year’s programme open to the wider public and will publish further detailed plans later this year. Please continue to check this website for further updates, you can also be kept up to date via our mailing list by emailing cli@britishcouncil.org.

Yes – the aim of the British Council is for the CLI programme to ultimately have a global reach. We hope that in the next two years we will be able to expand the reach of the programme to countries across the world.
Yes – during this first pilot year the programme will only include one participant from each country involved and seven from the UK (33 in total). However, as the programme progresses we hope to increase this number to 3 or 4 per country.
The programme of activity for each participant will be designed to suit the specific needs of the individual. For overseas participants activity is likely to include time spent in the UK either participating in training or doing a work based placement. Similarly, UK participants are likely to spend some time overseas as part of their programme.
