As the UK's international cultural relations organisation, the British Council, through its Connecting Classrooms initiative, is delighted to be working with Big Dance. Our aim is to enable the Big Dance Schools Pledge to reach school children in the UK and internationally via Connecting Classrooms, which build partnerships between schools in the UK and in over 60 countries.
The Big Dance Schools Pledge will involve 5 million schoolchildren from around the world who will take part in a world-record attempt to perform the biggest ever multi-location dance routine. For the project, UK choreographer and dance teacher Hakeem Onibudo has created a new piece of choreography with original music by Mickey J, co-Artistic Director of Boy Blue.
The dance will be taught in the UK to children in all London borough schools that sign up to the Schools Pledge. Internationally (and also in the UK) children will be able to access the dance via the British Council's Connecting Classrooms programme, which will distribute it worldwide and make the dance available online.
Those who participate in the Big Dance Schools Pledge will learn the piece of choreography over several months, with the aim of getting as many schoolchildren around the world performing the piece at the same time on 9 July 2010 at 1300 hours GMT. Nearer the time, schools will be asked to put aside 20 minutes each day for everyone to dance during Big Dance Week (which starts on 5 July 2010).
We hope that the project will encourage schools to work together with their international school partners on other Dance projects in future.
