This is the first solo exhibition in Latin America of work by one of Britain’s most acclaimed young artists, Rachel Whiteread. She has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in Europe and America over the last decade, won the Turner prize in 1993 and represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1997.
The exhibition was initiated by the British Council in collaboration with Brazilian curator and writer Paulo Venancio Filho, selector of the Rio section of Tate Modern’s recent Century City exhibition. Whiteread has been closely involved in the selection of work and will travel to both Rio and São Paulo for the installation of the exhibition.
Conceived as a modestly sized overview, the exhibition includes documentation on the destroyed public sculpture House of 1993 as well as the Holocaust memorial in Vienna’s Judenplatz, completed in 2000. Multiples, editions and small sculptures are shown alongside a selection of major sculptural works dating from 1990 through to the present, including works never previously shown, such as Untitled (Grey) a composite cement bath and Untitled (Felt Floor) an exquisite floor piece made from resinated white felt, both completed this year.
A catalogue will be published by the Museu de Arte Moderna Rio and Museu de Arte Moderna São Paulo in collaboration with the British Council with texts by curators Paulo Venancio Filho and Ann Gallagher.
