Mark Power: The Millennium Dome
Images: from Superstructure. Artist: Mark Power.
The starting point for this project was Mark Power’s belief that ‘photography shares with architecture a natural relationship with time and space’. Following in the footsteps of other photographers (Delamotte at the Crystal Palace, Durandelle and Chevojon at the Paris Opera and Lewis Hine at the Empire State Building), Power began this commission (funded by the New Millennium Experience) with the intention of producing work for posterity.

Merging documentary and fine art genres, Mark Power has succeeded in portraying the stages of the building’s construction whilst also suggesting the political and social debate it has generated. From the initial decontamination of the site through to its launch on New Year’s Eve 1999, Power conveys the physical scale and achievement of the construction itself, but at the same time affirms the human and political implications of this ‘grand projet’.

The exhibition toured South America for eighteen months from June 2000.

Five of the works in the exhibition now form part of the British Council Collection, available for all to see.
