Gary Hume

Born in 1962, Hume is widely recognised as one of the most significant painters to have come to prominence in the past decade. Since graduating from Goldsmiths in 1988, he has been closely associated with the successful young British art scene. In 1996 his work was exhibited in solo exhibitions at the Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, the Sao Paulo Bienal and was shortlisted for the Turner Prize. In 1998 Hume completed a commission for the newly refurbished Sadlers Wells Theatre, London.

Gary Hume represented Britain at the 48th Venice Biennale 1999 in the British pavilion. He also had major solo exhibitions last year at the Dean Gallery, Edinburgh 11 August - 17 October 1999 and at the Whitechapel Art Gallery 26 November - 23 January 2000.

A new exhibition of some thirty works opened at Culturgest, Lisbon 8 February - 2 April 2000 which provided the first opportunity in Portugal to see developments in Hume’s work over the past decade.

Exhibition tour dates:

Culturgest Lisbon, Portugal   8 February - 2 April 2000

La Caixa, Barcelona                 13 April - 25 June 2000
