Still Life
Naturaleza Muerta / Natureza Morta
Patrick Caulfield Black and White Café 1973; Gary Webb Cock and Bull 2001

One of a series of exhibitions focusing on traditional artistic genres. Like Landscape, which toured Europe 2000-01, the subject provides a thematic focus for a diverse selection of work, mostly recent purchases for the British Council Collection. The exhibition has been created specifically for a tour of Latin American countries and has been conceived as a collaborative project, a co-curated exhibition of work from other countries shown alongside or integrated with the British selection wherever possible.

By definition an arrangement of everyday objects, the still life evolved as an independent category of art in the seventeeth century. It was deemed to occupy the lowest rank of importance in the nineteenth century academies but became the characteristic pictorial genre for artists involved in most twentieth century art movements. Adopted by the avant-garde and thoroughly transformed, the still life has proved to be a remarkably adaptable mode of expression. The works in this exhibition include both contemporary explorations of traditional still life imagery and object assemblages representing current expressions of an evolved genre.  The exhibition incorporates a full range of media including sculpture, photography, installation, painting and video.
