Who We Are

Who is the British Council?

The British Council is the UK's public diplomacy and cultural organisation. We work in 110 countries and our aim is to connect people with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK to build lasting relationships around the world. This area of the website describes our work in the arts - if you are interested in our work in other sectors, please visit our corporate website here.

Who are Arts Group?

Arts Group is made up of around 60 staff in the UK, whose job it is to search for the best UK artists and arts professionals to work overseas, and arts managers that are situated in each country, who programme the work that will be right for their countries audience and also meets the British Council's objectives. Here is some more information about what we do and support and funding.

Our work

This site cannot begin to show all the projects we have been involved in, although there are many examples listed in our artform sections, which we hope will give a sense of our priorities.

Our priorities

  • Long-lasting relationships: forty per cent of our work is in collaboration with artists from the host country, thereby generating partnerships and links that will long outlast a single exhibition, performance or festival.
  • Openness to new work that appeals to young audiences: sound art as well as sculpture, electronica as well as classical, animation as well as film.
  • Social change: making sure that we're supporting arts work that reaches out to all areas of society as well as reaching the more traditional consumers of the arts.
  • Work to encourage creative businesses for whom the arts are a livelihood.

The scope of our work may give the impression that we have a vast budget for the arts, but this is not so. Support from businesses, governments, sponsors and partners is absolutely vital in allowing us to continue our work internationally.
