General notes on writing the statement of purpose

This is the most important part of the application form. With your statement of purpose you can persuade the selection committee to accept you for interview. In order to convince them, you must be convinced yourself. You must be sure of what you want, why you want it and how this particular programme will help you.

Before beginning to write, review your intellectual and personal development over your academic and professional career so far. In answering the questions of the application form, explain why you wish to study in the UK, stating clearly the professional reasons for your proposed course of study, as this is the main point of interest. Try to demonstrate clearly how your professional development and future career will be enhanced by studying in the UK. What will it enable you to do better in the future?  Do not give any unnecessary information!

It is a good idea not to write on the application form immediately. Develop an outline first, then write a draft proposal and examine it thoroughly.

Do I need to have professional experience in order to apply for the Fellowship?
Candidates should have work experience, MUST be in employment at the time of application, and MUST be able to demonstrate that they are dealing with challenging issues in one or more of the specified fields.
When is the deadline for the applications for the John Smith fellowship 2011?
The deadline is Friday 31st December 2010.
Can I send my application the British Council office?
All applications for John Smith Fellowships must be emailed directly to the John Smith Fellowship Trust in London and not emailed or posted to British Council offices.
Is it possible to send my application form by post?
The Trust doesn’t accept application forms on paper, by post, or by fax. Please do not submit forms to British Council or in country representatives as only applications emailed to applications@johnsmithtrust.org will be accepted.
How are candidates selected?

The processing of all application will take place after the deadline. After the short listing, the successful candidates will be invited for the interview.

Where possible and practical the Trust will be conducting interviews via web based video conference call facilities this year. Please be prepared to be interviewed in this manner. Applicants should be aware that local interviews will take place during January and February 2011, and should bear this in mind when planning holidays/travel.

After the interview successful candidates may be asked to sit IELTS test at British Council. The exam costs will be covered by the candidate.

When is the final selection of the candidates?
The final selection of the candidates will be concluded by end February 2011.
Do fellows receive a degree at the end of the programme?
The John Smith Fellowship Programme lasts for four weeks and does not constitute a university degree. Fellows who have completed the course receive a certificate confirming their participation at the end of the Programme.
Can I bring my family to the UK during my fellowship?

There are no additional allowances granted to family members (partners, spouses, children or other dependants). If any members of your family wish to accompany you, they must have enough funding to meet all their living expenses.

However, it is strongly recommended NOT to bring your family members to the UK during the period of your fellowship. The period of study is very intense and it is important that you are able to give it your full attention.

How do you advertise the schemes?
All information is available at the British Council website. We post announcements in the local newspapers and send out letters to all relevant ministries and other public and private institutions.
What is IELTS test?
IELTS - the International English Language Testing System (academic module).- is designed to assess whether a candidate is ready to study or train at undergraduate or postgraduate level. The test consists of four modules: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
What is the John Smith Fellowship requirement for IELTS?
Successful interviewees may be asked to sit an English exam. A minimum level of IELTS of 6.0 is normally needed for successful candidates. This only applies to applicants who have been a) short listed for interview and b) selected by the interview panel for inclusion in our final short list. Not all finalists are required to sit a test. The costs of this exam and related costs will be covered by the applicant.
Can you accept a TOEFL score as an alternative to IELTS?
Although some British universities do accept TOEFL as evidence of English language proficiency, our requirement is that all short-listed candidates take IELTS.
I have already taken the IELTS test. Do I need to resit it?
There is no need to retake the test if your test report is valid (not more than two years old) and the score is 6 or above.
