MODULES OF IELTS TEST

Academic Module - essential for those of you who are planning to undertake academic study.
General Training Module - suitable for candidates who are going to English-speaking countries to complete their secondary education, or to undertake training programmes not at degree level, or to emigrate to Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
TEST SECTIONS
Listening
This part is the same for all IELTS candidates and is divided into four sections. The first two sections are concerned with social needs while the last two are concerned with situations more closely related to educational or training contexts. Texts include both monologues and dialogues between two or three people and are heard once only.
Reading
The Academic Reading module consist of texts of general interests dealing with issues which are recognizably appropriate and accessible to candidates entering postgraduate or undergraduate courses.

The General Training Reading module's texts relate to social survival, training survival and general reading.
Writing
Appropriate responses for the Academic Writing module are short essays or general reports, addressed to tutors or to an educated non-specialist audience.

The General Training Writing module requires candidates to write personal semi-formal or formal correspondence, or to write on a given topic as a part of a class assignment.
Speaking
This part of the examination is again the same for all IELTS candidates and is centred around a structured interview with an emphasis on general speaking skills. It assesses whether candidates have the necessary knowledge and skills to communicate effectively with native speakers of English.
SCORES

Band scores are recorded on a Test Report Form,  showing overall ability as well as performance in listening, reading, writing and speaking from 1 to 9. (Absolute beginner through to expert user with fully operational command of the language, appropriate, accurate and fluent with complete understanding.)

Different institutions have their own entrance requirements. In general, universities require an Overall Band Score of around 6.5 for entrance to academic courses. You are advised to check with the particular institution to which you are applying.
