The Certificate in Secondary English Language Teaching (CiSELT) is an in-service course, written specifically for English language teachers working in secondary schools with learners aged 11-18. In some contexts, this means the course is appropriate for teachers working at upper primary level. CiSELT is mapped to the Continuing Professional Development Framework (CPD).

Each module contains five or six units. The final module in CiSELT Proficient is 'Core Classroom Issues', which contains eight units, of which at least two must be chosen. Extra units may be chosen in order to deliver a longer course than the basic 16 units/48 hours.

All units in CiSELT Advanced are optional though it is necessary to choose at least two units from each module. As with CiSELT Proficient, it is possible to deliver more than a 16-unit/48-hour course.
Each unit consists of three hours of training but time for assignments is additional to this. Each course module provides approximately 15 hours of content.
A course certificate is issued on successful participation of the course and completion of the assignments as described in the handbook. Certificates can also be issued on completion of each module with the full certificate issued at the end of the course.
