Akram Khan had an established career as a solo artist. In December 1999 he teamed up with Farooq Chaudhry, currently the company’s Producer, who initiated his move to the prestigious X-Group choreographic project at P.A.R.TS (Performance Arts Research Training Studios) in Belgium.
Akram Khan’s participation in the X-Group project concluded in July 2000 with the presentation of his trio “Rush”, which at that stage, was a work in progress. The work, “Rush” signalled Akram Khan’s start as a group choreographer and soon after, he co-founded the Akram Khan Company with Farooq Chaudhry.
Since then it has established itself as one of the foremost young dance troupes in the world.
The Observer 29 Aug 2004 The stories are in the dances, once you grasp how to read them: upside-down baobab trees, tillers of the soil, women in labour, a sleeping community. The movement is earthbound, downcast, best seen from above. [The] performers seem elements of the earth and sky. Jann PARRY
The Sunday Times 19 May 2002 Khan is a charismatic innovator in blending kathak and contemporary dance techniques – mercurial, masterful in his brilliant alternations of speed and stillness. He and his four fellow dancers scythe and slice, spin and whirl through this force field with breathtaking momentum. Hands flicker to a blur; arms fly like rotor blades. The effect is hypnotic. David Dougill
On 15 and 16 March 2004 we brought the acclaimed Russell Maliphant Dance Company to perform in Armenia.
Although it was raining heavily and cold on those days in Yerevan the Russian Drama Theatre where they performed was full. Everyone greatly enjoyed the performance and left inspired and enriched. Here is what they thought of it:

This performance was just like a dream in colours. And you don’t want to forget it. It was so wonderful and, of course, unforgettable. |

At first I thought that it’s going to be boring, because I really don’t like ballet, but everything was very interesting and unsurpassable. It was a wonderful performance and I am very thankful to you!!! |

Saw Shakespeare in L.O.V.E. So expectations were high, very high! Largely met. Very good performance. |

This is the third performance you organised that I attend. I am impressed and delighted. Organise as many such events as possible. |

It brings a breath of fresh air into our country. |

Ballet in Lotus Pose By Sona Meloyan, Golos Armenii Five silhouettes in white intertwining into unimaginable figures, then pushing off to unite again. Sometimes there was a feeling that those were not dancers in front of audiences but masters of karate or other martial arts, but the strong, subtle art of ballet was always present during the whole performance. Close contact of nature and art , body and music, light and shadow – this is how Armenian audiences saw Russell Maliphant dance group. |
The visit of Random Ballet in June 2002 was our first big arts event. The reaction from the Armenian public was ecstatic – they had never seen contemporary dance like this before.
“In our dull life (Random performance) was like a ray of light.” Ara Danielian, MR Consultant, Director CIVIS Ltd
“It was great and unexpected. I hope that all Armenian dancers are here tonight. Modern is something rare here and it is a new idea, new technique. It was in every way a holiday today. Professional dancer “Barekamutyun” (Friendship) Contemporary Dance Group
