In Argentina the British Council has worked since 2003 with three partners that have integration and inclusion high on the agenda.
Instituto River Plate is a school organised by a sports club best known for its major league soccer team, Club Sportivo Dock Sud was set up by Shell to support the disadvantaged community around its Buenos Aires oil refinery, and Colegio Southern Cross is a bilingual school.
Each partner works in different parts of Buenos Aires with people from very different social backgrounds. They all aim to promote self-development, self-esteem and community spirit, and all use sport to achieve these goals.
UK-Argentina school link A school link has been established between Southern Cross School in Buenos Aires and The Manor School in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
This is what Sofia, a Young Leader from Southern Cross School, tells us about her experience in the programme: ‘Thanks to this project I formed a new concept of the word integration – through the compromise and responsibility which my fellow young leaders and I assumed. I can say that this project helped me a great deal as a person because it opened up new bounds which otherwise I would not have explored. I lived totally different experiences to those which usually make up my daily routine. I shared unforgettable moments with children of very different abilities, bring them together into heterogeneous groups and making sure that everyone felt comfortable and had fun.’
