Juan Nascimbene is the Argentine candidate that has been selected to participate in this conference. 16-19 year-olds activists and future leaders from around the world are given a platform to discuss global issues such as climate change, intercultural conflict and radicalisation, disease and poverty.
The Hornby Regional School is co-funded by the Hornby Educational Trust and the British Council and offers an opportunity to build regional networks and create projects between different countries. British publisher and journalist Nick Caistor is participating in the Semana de Editores (Publishing Week). This one-week programme, organised by Fundación TYPA, aims to promote Argentine literature and stregthen links between publishers from different countries. Nick Caistor has translated works by Alan Pauls and Edgardo Cozarinsky among other Latin American writers. Nick Caistor is giving an open talk on 24 April at the Universidad de Belgrano at 10 hours (Zabala 1837,Salón Roca Primer Subsuelo, Buenos Aires).
Vivien Stern is Senior Research Fellow at the International Centre for Prison Studies (ICPS) at King’s College, London, and Honorary President of Penal Reform International (PRI), a non-governmental organisation promoting penal reform throughout the world. Her latest book is ‘Creating Criminals’. During her visit to Argentina, she is participating in the III AIDEF (Inter-American Association of Public Defenders) Congress. On 12 June at 1830, together with Supreme Court Judge E Raúl Zaffaroni, she is giving an open talk (with interpretation) in the University of Buenos Aires Law Faculty (Aula de Carrera Docente).
Five young British publishers are visiting Argentina on an industry tour. On 19 June at 1700 they are talking, together with young Argentine, Mexican and Columbian publishers, on ‘New trends in the UK publishing market’ at Clásica y Moderna (Callao 892). This event (with interpretation) is open to the public.

A young Argentine is taking part in this activity which brings together 16 to 18 year olds from around the world. The event is related to the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of ‘On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection’.

The British Council is visiting the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo as part of the EuroPosgrados university tour. We have a stand and are giving a talk to students about studying in the UK and scholarships.
Two head teachers from Hayes Park Primary School (London Borough of Hillingdon) and Whiteheath Infant and Nursery School (Tower Hamlets) are visiting Argentina. On 19 and 20 they are participating in a workshop in Buenos Aires together with eight head teachers from schools in Buenos Aires, Tucumán, Chubut and Mendoza. Themes are ‘School management and coaching in relation to self-evaluation’, and ‘Every child matters’. They are also visiting schools around the country.
The British Council is supporting this initiative organised by the Secretaría de Cultura de la Municipalidad de General Pueyrredon (Argentina) and the University of Birmingham. The event (comprising exhibitions, presentations and lectures) is the first step to support the development of Mar del Plata in relation to local economic policies, focussing on criticical thinking and creativity. The British Council is participating in this fair in Tandil (Universidad Nacional del Centro) as part of the EuroPosgrados programme – talking to students about studying in the UK and scholarships.
This large festival, a celebration to mark the end of this project, is coordinated by all the trainers, tutors and young leaders from the three partner institutions (Instituto River Plate, Colegio Southern Cross and Municipalidad de San Martín), who have been involved in the programme since 2003.

A group of 11 primary teachers from North Yorkshire schools are visiting schools in Argentina. The theme is ‘Turning Schools Around in Challenging Circumstances’.
Course participants, online tutors and trainers meet for their sixth and final face-to-face meeting at the Escuela Normal J B Alberdi in San Miguel de Tucumán. The programme is the result of a partnership between the British Council and the Ministry of Education of Tucumán.

- The 43rd IATEFL (International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language) Conference takes place in Cardiff. Plenary Speakers are Elana Shohamy, Marc Prensky, Bonny Norton, Fauzia Shamim and Claudia Ferradas. The conference is attended by around 1500 ELT professionals from more than 70 countries. It involves a 3.5 -4-day programme of over 300 talks, workshops and symposiums and, in addition to giving delegates a chance to meet leading theorists and writers, and exchange ideas with fellow professionals from all sectors of ELT, it enables them to see the latest ELT publications and services in a large resources exhibition involving around 70 ELT-related exhibitors.
The Trust supports ELT practitioners from developing countries and countries in transition. This scheme enables teachers of English to attend Master courses in Linguistics and ELT at British Universities. The application process closes on Monday 13 April.
We are selecting two young Argentines, aged between 16-18 years, to attend an International Student Summit, held in partnership with the Natural History Museum. Applications are being accepted until 30 April. The theme is Darwin and Evolutionary Science to reflect the influential legacy and far-reaching scope of Charles Darwin’s theories and work. The summit is to take place at the Natural History Museum London from June 30 to July 2 2009.

Los Campesinos, part of Wichita Recordings, are playing in Buenos Aires. We are working on this, jointly with local producer Matías Lóizaga and venue La Trastienda Club, as a pre promotional event to the Wichita Tour, coming to the city in early July as part of our Incubator project.
The Minister of Education of the City of Buenos Aires, Dr Mariano Narodowski, is participating in this seminar. The agenda includes discussions on projects related to bilingual schools managed by the government, drawing on results and experiences from Spain. The programme includes visits to schools and contacts with students, teachers and education authorities. Participants from Mexico, Colombia and Chile are also participating.
