V&A opens first international exhibition in Libya Street Art: from the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and Libya

The V&A, in collaboration with the British Council Libya, will be opening its first exhibition in Libya on 31 March 2012. The only international exhibition to be held in Libya since the revolution, it will explore the visual content, messages and techniques of street art, including examples of contemporary Libyan work.

Street art in Libya as a vibrant visual expression and democratic language has flourished since the Arab Spring and revolution in 2011 and holds social and political significance as well as aesthetic interest.

The V&A has been collecting street art prints since 2004. Drawn from this collection, Street Art: from the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and Libya It will display more than 40 highlights from this constantly evolving and transient genre which is found across cities over the world. It will showcase prints and stickers by emerging and established artists including D*Face, Banksy and Shepard Fairey as well as works by contemporary Libyan street artists including Naser Al shibani, Tareq Abu ayana and Mohamed Ellafi and photographs in situ.

Martin Roth, Director of the V&A said: “Street art is a thriving contemporary form of creative expression in Libya and the V&A was delighted to have been invited to produce the exhibition by the Ministry of Culture and Civil Society. We hope it will lead to further and deeper collaborations with Libya.”

With the historical roots of street art echoing cave paintings, stencilled slogans and images in political campaigning, the exhibition will attempt to capture a snapshot of work from the last ten years that continues to influence mainstream graphics. The spontaneous nature of street art allows it to be used in instant political commentary, as recently witnessed in Libya and elsewhere in the Arab world, allowing artists to articulate opinions outside the conventional channels of political debate.

The exhibition will also provide opportunities to share the expertise of V&A staff and there will be a programme of workshops and learning events during the run of the exhibition.
