OUR INTEGRATED EQUALITY SCHEME
We have developed our Integrated Equality Scheme to help us promote equality and eliminate discrimination in the areas of gender, race and disability. Find out how we are applying this scheme worldwide.
WhO WE ARE
An organisation creating opportunities for people worldwide
The British Council is the United Kingdom's international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations. Our purpose is to build mutually beneficial relationships between people in the UK and other countries and increase appreciation of the UK’s creative ideas and achievements.

We were founded in 1934 and today we are a major international organization employing 7,400 staff. We are present in 229 towns/cities and 110 countries and territories worldwide, we work with ordinary people as well as with governments and decision-makers, building relationships and creating opportunities.
WHO YOU ARE
We mainly target people between the ages of 18 and 35 but we are increasingly working with people of all ages who are pursuing lifelong learning opportunities.

We build relationships that last, particularly with younger people by engaging them with creative ideas from the UK that help them to achieve their goals.
WHAT WE DO
We connect people worldwide through programmes in education and training, English language teaching, libraries and information, the arts, science and technology, sport, governance and civil society. We take pride in the fact that these activities can often succeed in bringing people together where high-level diplomacy and politics cannot.
IN ALGERIA
Originally established in Algiers in 1962, British Council Algeria closed in 1994 due to security situation then reopened in Algiers in 2006 with operations commencing in 2007.

We aim to work with partners throughout Algeria to provide learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK and to build lasting relationships between the UK and Algeria.

Every year, The British Council in collaboration with the British Embassy, offer a number of prestigious Chevening scholarships for postgraduate studies in the UK.

Our projects

We design and implement large-scale international and local projects which enable us to make a difference in a number of challenging areas. Through these projects we are looking to work in different private and public partnerships.

  • Education and Employability

Our Connecting Classrooms programme supports schools in the UK and Algeria in developing joint projects intended to bring an international dimension to children’s learning.

Our Skills for Employability programme encourages closer links between education and industry as a way of helping get young people into jobs and giving them the skills to thrive in the 21st century economy.

Our 1000 teachers’ project is intended to support middle school teachers of English and help them develop their skills.

  • Social Partnerships

Our Leadership in Community Development project seeks to build a network of leaders working towards stronger social inclusion and positive change in their communities.

  • Cultural Partnerships

Our Cultural Leadership project is developing a new generation of arts and cultural leaders with skills in cultural advocacy, policy formulation, leadership and management.

We also work in the arts through the presentation of high quality events covering the range of different artistic disciplines, with special emphasis on contemporary manifestations in areas like the music, drama, dance and literature. All our activities involve the participation of Algerian artists as a way of stimulating dialogue and the sharing of experiences between the two nations.
