Power in the Voice, is a powerful three-year expressive programme, designed to celebrate people finding their voices and expressing themselves. It creates a platform for young people 15+ years to celebrate their own creativity through various mediums such as creative writing, music, the spoken word, rap, break dancing, graffiti art and more.
The programme involves African and UK professional artists who work together with youth to develop their performance and writing skills. The professional artists work with schools and youth groups, preparing them for the Power in the Voice competition, which culminates in a Southern African regional final in Botswana 2008.
Participating countries in the programme include: South Africa, Botswana, Mauritius, Mozambique, United Kingdom, Zambia and Zimbabwe
The South Africa Power in the Voice Festival was held in September 2007 and was won by Passion D’Art from Kensington High School in Gauteng. Passion D’Art is a dynamic 13 member group who works with artist and mentor Zubz. They will go on to represent South Africa at the finals in Botswana.
This year, Zena Edwards, a renowned London based, poet, writer and musician attended the festival. She held a writing workshop and was also a judge at the schools competition. Zena performed at the annual Arts Alive 2007 festival which showcased talented professional performers in the mediums of poetry, film, music, visual arts, theatre and dance.
