British Council Africa
Welcome to the British Council Africa website

While the site may look different from the one you are used to, all the British Council’s projects and initiatives throughout sub-Saharan Africa are still contained on this updated portal site.

If you are a student and planning to further your studies abroad, or if you want to improve your English, then we have just the programme for you. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam is an internationally recognised qualification. In an IELTS exam you will be tested in listening, reading, writing and speaking, whichever module you decide to take. Visit our IELTS page for more information.

The British Council has a number of scholarships to help you should you require funding for your studies abroad. Visit our funding page and learn more about the Chevening Scholarship, the Commonwealth Scholarship and the Fellowship Plan as well as exploring links to other scholarships.

If you are a young leader and would like to develop your skills, the British Council’s development programme will help you reach your potential and equip you with the skills you need to become an effective leader. This programme also gives you a chance to get in touch with a number of young leaders from Africa and the UK and gives you the opportunity to debate some burning issues.

Do you want to know more about climate change? Visit our climate change page, see what you can do to help raise awareness about this issue and read about what other Africans are doing.

Are you a student? Our Dreams+Teams programme uses sport to develop Young Leaders and establish partnerships between schools around the world. Trainers tutor young people to take the lead and organise sports festivals in their respective countries.

Do you have the heart for volunteering? The Global Xchange programme is a six-month exchange that offers young people the opportunity to share their skills and make a contribution to needy communities, while personally benefiting from intercultural exchange.

If you would like to know about the British Council’s involvement in Africa, visit our News in Africa section and read inspirational stories of Africans who are doing it for themselves.

For more information on upcoming events in your country and throughout Africa, please visit our events page.

We welcome you to the British Council’s website and hope that you will learn more about our programmes. If you have any queries, please direct them here.
