The British Council is fairly new in Mozambique, it has been operating in the capital city, Maputo since 1989. We now have 20 members of staff including four full time teachers in the Teaching Centre.
Given the setting of Mozambique's growing economy, our work in this country is extremely challenging. Mozambique has 20 million inhabitants of which almost 10% are concentrated in the capital city - Maputo. There is visible development in the country and integration in important political, economic and trading regions such as SADC and the Commonwealth has also taken place.
This development and openness leads to an increasing number of educated, aspiring and ambitious people in Mozambique. The potential for the British Council's reach is therefore enormous.
