Chevening Scholarship Applicants

We welcome all Chevening Scholarship applicants seeking to take an IELTS test to demonstrate their English language ability. IELTS is the world's most popular English Language test and is your route to study in the UK. We urge you to prepare well and book early to ensure that you receive the score you require. You will receive your results within 13 days. Information on how to book and prepare for IELTS including free practice materials are available on the TakeIELTS website.

		How do I register?

Apply online on the IELTS website. (Candidates applying online have 3 working days to register. The online application will be cancelled should the candidate fail to register within the set deadline).

Download the IELTS application form and fill it in.

Submit the following documentation upon registration to our Customer Services team:

a. Online Application form or Offline application form duly filled in

b. Original and Photocopy of your valid National Identity Card or Passport

c. One coloured passport sized photograph, without glasses, with your signature at the back.

		How do I pay?

You can pay for your test in four ways:

			pay in cash at our office
			pay by office cheque (i.e. bank guaranteed cheques) drawn to British Council
			pay by bank transfer (bank details will be given on request)
			pay by credit card at the counter.

		How do I prepare for my test?

The first step is to make sure you understand the IELTS test format. You need to know what will be expected of you on test day.

Understand the IELTS test format

			Study the test format to make sure that you know what to expect.
			Look carefully at the content of each part of the IELTS test: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
			Get to know the different types of questions that you may be asked in each part.

Once you are familiar with the IELTS test format, you will need to undertake a number of focused preparation activities.

Recommended preparation activities

			Examine our IELTS practice test papers and answers.
			Take practice tests under timed conditions.
			Practise with the British Council's IELTS online preparation resources, available free when you book your test with the British Council.
			Buy IELTS self-study books and materials. You can buy the Official IELTS Practice Materials Volume 2 - These materials include sample tests for all modules: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and answers with examiners’ comments. The DVD contains a Listening test for you to practise and film footage of three students taking the Speaking test.
			Consider taking an IELTS preparation course with the British Council. This is a 10 hour IELTS Preparation Course (Workshop) which costs Rs 3,900 (inclusive of specimen pack).
			Do you want to practice your English vocabulary? British Council IELTS Word Power is a free vocabulary practice app for IELTS test takers. Download IELTS Word Power or follow these instructions.

IELTS workshop:

All or our workshops are scheduled to finish before the nearest IELTS test dates. Workshops are scheduled either:

			In the evenings, Monday to Friday for 2 hours each night, from 1730 to 1930, at our premises in Rose Hill.
			Over 2 consecutive Saturdays, from 1000 to 1600 (includes a 1-hour lunch break) at our off-site location.

		What will happen before the test?

	On receipt of your application our exams team will write to you to confirm your test date, speaking and writing test schedules as well as the venue details. The confirmation letter is sent through registered post no later than 10 days prior to your test date. Non-Mauritian residents will receive a scanned copy of the letter through e-mail.

		What should I take to the test?

Proof of your identity which is the same as the identity information you provided on your application form.

Please note: Make sure you arrive on time so that you have enough time to get comfortable. We will provide you with a pencil and an eraser. Mobile phones or bags are not allowed in the test room.

		When will I receive my results?

Results are obtained 13 days after the test date. Unfortunately results can not be given over the phone, by fax or e-mail. You must collect your Test Report Form (TRF) in person along with a form of identification. In the event that a different person must collect your results, please provide us with a signed authorisation note.

In addition to the certificate given to the candidate, candidates can request on their application forms (Section 24), that up to 5 copies of the results be sent to receiving institutions. Receiving institutions are local academic institutions (e.g. universities) and overseas institutions not registered to view candidate results online. Registered institutions only receive results online; here is a list of registered institutions.
