Chevening Scholarship Applicants
We welcome all Chevening Scholarship applicants seeking to take an IELTS test to demonstrate their English language ability. IELTS is the world's most popular English Language test and is your route to study in the UK. We urge you to prepare well and book early to ensure that you receive the score you require. You will receive your results within 13 days. Information on how to book and prepare for IELTS including free practice materials are available on the TakeIELTS website.

How do I register?

Apply online on the TakeIELTS website. (Candidates applying online have 3 working days to register. The online application will be cancelled should the candidate fail to register within the set deadline).


Download the IELTS application form and fill it in.

Submit the following documentation upon registration to our Customer Services team:

a. Online Application form or downloaded application form duly filled in

b. Original and Photocopy of your valid National Identity Card or Passport

How do I pay?
You can pay for your test in four ways: 
pay in cash at our office
pay by bank guaranteed cheques drawn to British Council

When and where can I take my test?

IELTS registration

Register for your IELTS test by visiting the 'Take IELTS' website. Select your location/area and find suitable test dates.

How do I prepare for my test?

Please visit the TakeIELTS website.

The first step is to make sure you understand the IELTS test format. You need to know what will be expected of you on test day.

Understand the IELTS test format 
Study the test format to make sure that you know what to expect.
Look carefully at the content of each part of the IELTS test: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
Get to know the different types of questions that you may be asked in each part.
Once you are familiar with the IELTS test format, we encourage you to undertake a number of focused preparation activities. 

Recommended preparation activities 
Examine our IELTS practice test papers and answers.
Take practice tests under timed conditions. The British Council offers free Pre-testing sessions once per month. We recommend you to book a seat well in advance. For more information about IELTS Pre-testing, contact our Customer service team.
Practise with the British Council's IELTS online preparation resources, available free when you book your test with the British Council.
Buy IELTS self-study books and materials. You can buy the Official IELTS Practice Materials Volume 2 - These materials include sample tests for all components: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and answers with examiners’ comments. The DVD contains a Listening test for you to practise and film footage of three students taking the Speaking test.
Consider taking an IELTS preparation course with the British Council. This is a 10 hour IELTS Preparation Course (Workshop) which costs Rs 3,900 (inclusive of Official IELTS Practice Materials Volume 2).

IELTS workshop: 
All or our workshops are scheduled to end prior to an IELTS session. Workshops are scheduled in the evenings, Tuesday to Friday from 17:00 to 19:30 at our premises in Rose-Hill

What will happen before the test?
On receipt of your application our exams team will write to you to confirm your test date, speaking and writing test schedules as well as the venue details. The confirmation letter is sent through registered post no later than 10 days prior to your test date. Non-Mauritian residents will receive a scanned copy of the letter via e-mail.
What should I take to the test?
Bring along your Identification Document (national ID Card or Passport) it should be the same document as the one on your application form.

Please note: Make sure you reach the test venue at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time for the test. We will provide you with a pencil and an eraser. Mobile phones and bags are not allowed in the test room.

When will I receive my results?

Paper Certificate and online scores are obtained 13 days after the test date as from 15:00. Results will be available on a Friday if the test date was a Saturday and on a Wednesday if the test date was a Thursday. Unfortunately results cannot be given over the phone, by fax or e-mail. You must collect your Test Report Form (TRF) in person along with a form of identification. In the event that a different person must collect your results, please provide us with a signed authorisation note.

Candidates receive only one certificate(TRF). Candidates can request for original copies of certificate be sent to receiving institutions by applying for additional test report forms at the Customer Service Desk. Receiving institutions are local academic institutions (e.g. universities) and overseas institutions not registered to view candidate results online. Registered institutions only receive results online; here is a list of registered institutions.

In addition to the actual Test Report Form that will be given to you, you can also view your results online. Click here to see your results. Please note that you will not be able to use the online results as an official document. Results cannot be previewed online more than 40 days after the test date.

The British Council and the examining boards take all reasonable steps to provide continuity of service. We feel sure you will understand, however, that we cannot be held responsible for any interruptions caused by circumstances beyond our control. If examinations or their results are disrupted, cancelled or delayed, every effort will be made to resume normal service as soon as possible. The British Council’s liability will be limited to the refund of the registration fee or retesting at a later date. All fees are valid for the current registration period only and are subject to change. Please check the relevant web pages for the latest fees before registering for the next session of exams.
