The British Council is the UK’s official cultural relations organisation that delivers hundreds of projects in the area of education, arts, science, sports and governance, all over the world. We are a world leader in the provision of English Language Training and at our centre here in Mauritius, we have been providing English courses for more than 6 years at our Teaching Centre in Rose Hill.

We offer a variety of high quality English courses which cater to all learners needs. Our customers come to the British Council with a wide range of cultural backgrounds, experiences, expectations and learning requirements.

Our English language courses are tailored to meet the specific needs of our customers, including General English for Adults, Cambridge and IELTS Exam Preparation, Pre-University Skills Courses, as well as courses in English for Business, Academic and Specific Purposes. We also offer a wide range of young learner courses, including General and CPE Exam Preparation courses, and fun, engaging Holiday courses.

We also offer specialised one-to-one specialist training for Corporate Clients and both small and large group tuition for many other sectors including teacher training. We are also proud to deliver outreach projects providing educational support to the local community in collaboration with our NGO partners.

As a student at the British Council, you will experience significant improvement in your English language learning as all of our programmes are delivered by highly-experienced and fully-qualified English Language Teaching Professionals. All learners are assessed with a placement test before commencement and assigned to classes which are level-appropriate. All courses are structured with a clear syllabus and achievable learning outcomes and progress is regularly monitored by friendly and helpful teachers.

Our courses are held in spacious and comfortable learning environments and use authentic and relevant learning materials. Students are provided with plenty of opportunities to practice both productive and receptive skills of English in realistic situations with other learners, which maximises their fluency and accuracy of the language.

How can I register?

Before the start of our courses, you need to do a placement test. Our placement testing procedure takes one-hour. It allows us to determine your level of English prior to enrolling you into any of courses. With this information we are able to recommend classes which will be of an appropriate level to allow you to maximise your language development. The placement test is Rs 300 per person.

How can I pay for my course?
You can pay the course fees by cash, cheque or debit/credit card. Payments for courses must be made before your course starts.
What courses can I take?

We offer English courses for primary children (7-10 years), senior young learners (11-17 years) and adults (18+ years) throughout the year. We have three 12-week terms starting in January, May and August. We also offer holiday programmes for young learners and adult soft skills courses.

12 weeks - 24 hours (2-hour classes, once a week)

Our Teaching Centre operates a Monday to Saturday working week. While class times may vary from term to term according to demand and teacher availability, please see table below for class times for last term.

Who are our teachers?
Our teachers are all fluent English language speakers with internationally-accredited English Language Teaching qualifications and a vast amount of experience in the EFL teaching  industry. Our teachers are happy to assist learners in achieving their learning goals by providing advice, support and clear instructions. Lessons are varied, cover a wide range of stimulating and informative topics and employ a broad range of techniques using methodologies proven to be successful in second language acquisition.

Other useful information
We are closed on public holidays although classes are replaced within the term.
We reserve the right to change the course schedule or cancel a course.
No reimbursements can be made once the class has started.  Exceptional refunds will be given at the management’s discretion but a 15% administrative fee will be charged.
The maximum number of students enrolled in a class may vary according to the course but does not exceed 20.
Our teaching centre is registered with the Mauritius Qualifications Authority (MQA) and our Adult courses are MQA approved.
