2008 Secondary School Short Story Competition:
Your opportunity to have your story published, meet with famous British authors and appear on a BBC documentary

The Ministry of Education and Human Resources and the British  Council is organising a competition in connection with the prestigious Le Prince Maurice prize for the novel of the heart. This year, 10 distinguished British authors will visit Mauritius at the beginning of June to participate in the selection of the winning novel. They will also choose the winners of this short story competition.

Topic: “A story from my heart”.
We are looking for an original story presenting characters and events that matter to you. The winning entries will show believable characters, a clear sense of place and keep us interested in finding out what happens next. Closing date: 20 May 2008.

Terms and Conditions

1. There are two categories:

Junior: (for forms 1-4) approximately 1200 words
Senior (for forms 5+6) approximately 2000 words

2. Handwritten (ink) or computer printed (include a word count) stories should be submitted in an envelope marked Short Story Competition, with your name and the name of your school. All envelopes must therefore be delivered at our office.

3. E-mail (include a word count) stories should be submitted to us via email, marked Short Story Competition, with your name and the name of your school.

4. The closing date for receipt of the stories is 20 May 2008.

5. The winner of each category will receive a free place on our English language 10 week course and will be invited to the workshop on creative writing on 7 June 2008 given by the British authors. We also expect to publish the winning stories in an anthology of best young writers of Mauritius.

6. Runners up will receive a free place on our creative writing workshop, and a book pack on the 6 of June 2008.

7. The British authors will make visits to schools attended by writers on the competition short list. BBC TV is making a documentary about le Prince Maurice prize and your school could be included in the filming, so here is your opportunity to bring more prestige to your school.

8. Winners will be announced at the British Council ceremony on the 5th of June 2008 to which the shortlisted writers will be invited to attend.
