Peacekeeping English Project
PEP in Ethiopia

In Ethiopia the project began in February 2008 and is based in the Peacekeeping Centre of the Ethiopian Ministry of National Defence in Addis Ababa. The project aims:

To raise the language level of Ethiopian defence force personnel in order that they can effectively participate in United Nations and African Union Peace Support Missions that use English as the working language.
To establish a long term sustainable English language training system in conjunction the Peacekeeping Centre at its six language centres throughout the country.
To develop the English language training system based on specialised syllabi, self-access study facilities in each of the centres, a purpose designed testing system and a range of teacher training opportunities.

In the initial phase the project supported the Ethiopian Ministry of National Defence in setting up and delivering intensive English courses with teaching conducted by Ethiopian teachers who are contracted by the Ethiopian Ministry of National Defence. Teacher training for these teachers has included Cambridge University’s Certificate of English Teaching to Adults (CELTA). Self-access centres have been established and are being used to complement classroom teaching. In the future, as well as building on the existing achievements, the project will expand its range of training courses for teachers.

The project is managed by the British Council through a Steering Group in London consisting of the London global PEP manager and UK sponsoring clients. In-country there is a country project management team consisting of representatives from the Ethiopian Ministry of National Defence, the British Council Country Director, representatives from the British Embassy and the project manager.
