WHAT TYPE OF IELTS SHOULD YOU TAKE?

You can take either the Academic or General Training Reading and Writing modules. Choose the Academic Reading and Writing module if you are planning to undertake academic study in a higher education institution.

If you are planning to undertake non-academic training or apply for immigration to Australia, Canada or New Zealand, we recommend you take the General Training Reading and Writing modules.

IELTS TEST STRUCTURE

You must complete four modules: Listening, Reading, Writingand Speaking to obtain an IELTS Test Report Form.

You are tested in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The total test time is two hours and 45 minutes.

You have a choice between Academic and General Training. These modules have different Reading and Writing papers.

The first three modules - Listening, Reading and Writing - must be completed in one day. No extra time will be allowed for a break during the first three modules. The speaking test can take place within 7 days before or after the written test. Please check the dates of your tests very carefully when you receive your invitation letter. Your time slots for the speaking test will also be confirmed in the invitation letter. This is sent to you 1-2 weeks before your test.

TEST RESULTS: IELTS BAND SCORE SYSTEM

IELTS band scale

There is no pass or fail mark.

Scores are given on an Overall Band Score of one to nine.

Different institutions have their own entrance requirements and may require minimum scores in particular modules. In general, universities request an Overall Band Score of 6.0 or 6.5 for entrance to academic courses. You are advised to check the score required with the particular institution to which you are applying.

Test Report

Scores are recorded on an official Test Report Form, showing overall ability, as well as performance in listening, reading, writing and speaking.

The results of your IELTS test will be issued 13 days after you have taken the test. You can also see your results electronically in 13 days from here. It is not possible to give test results over the telephone or by e-mail.

You can request additional copies of TRF to be sent to maximum of five institutions / organisations at the time of registration – we will charge actual courier cost.

If you would like your test to be remarked, we can send your scripts to Cambridge within 4 weeks of the results being issued. In this case, another examiner in the UK remarks all your test papers - we will charge USD 120.
