English Language Resource Centre, Balkh University, Mazar e Sharif

The English Language Resource Centre (ELRC) at Balkh University is a new venture to bring the best of contemporary English teaching and learning materials to the students and staff of Balkh University. It will also support English teachers working in Mazar.

Based in the Language and Literature faculty of Balkh, it has several thousand materials, including textbooks, reference books, readers and literature, cassettes, videos and televison. It also has computer workstations. Most materials will be for reference, but some textbooks and teacher resource materials will be on loan.

The ELRC was launched in March 2004 with the support of Balkh University, the British Council, and the UK Provincial Reconstruction Team.

It is fully-funded by the British Council and managed by Balkh University and the British Council. There are two full-time staff, and additional part-time English language teaching consultants to provide advice.  It is mainly aimed at Balkh University English language teachers and students at Balkh, as well as students of journalism and those in the economics and business faculty. But it is also a resource for members of the university teaching English in Mazar.
