British Council as a Sole Corporate Trustee

The British Council is the sole corporate trustee of a number of registered and unregistered charities. It is responsible for the administration of these charities.

Registered charities

Hammond Trust
Reginald Hammond OBE bequeathed money to be used to provide financial assistance for students of Asian origin who experience unexpected financial difficulties to complete their studies in the UK. The maximum grant is £500, and around 12 such grants are made each year.

Latin American Studies Scholarships Trust
The Trust was set up following the 1985 earthquake in Mexico City in which 3 young British language assistants were tragically killed. It assists undergraduate students of Spanish, Portuguese or Latin American Studies who work and undertake studies in any Latin American country through the Language Assistants Scheme or any similar scheme and who experience financial difficulties.

Lefevre Trust
Madame Nina Lefèvre established the Trust after the death of her husband, Ernest Albert Lefèvre, in1940 to promote relations between the UK and France through partnership and the mutual learning of each other's language and customs. The Trust supports an exchange programme for French and British boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 19.

The Sir Shiu Kin Tang Educational Trust
Hong Kong businessman Sir S K Tang CBE bequeathed a sum of money to the UK government, part of which was to be used to establish a scholarship scheme to enable students from Hong Kong to study in the UK at postgraduate level.

UK 9/11 Scholarships Fund
In April 2003 the World Trade Centre Disaster Fund set up the UK 9/11 Scholarships Fund. It seeks to award scholarships to the children or dependants of victims of the September 11 attacks, or other subsequent terrorist tragedy, for study at higher or further education institutions in the United Kingdom

De Souza Trust for Goa Students
The De Souza Trust Goa Scholarship, funded from the estate of Mr Diego Frank de Souza, provides financial assistance for young people of Goan origin or those holding Goan domicile to study or train in the UK.
