Security

The British Council creates international opportunities for the people of the UK and other countries and builds trust between them worldwide. In all that we do the British Council must acknowledge our duty of care to our staff, customers, visitors, consultants, contractors and others with whom we engage in a physical or online environment. We have a responsibility to protect the organisation’s information systems, physical and intellectual assets including all information created and held within the organisation against loss or compromise.

Security systems, processes and procedures will be implemented to comply with UK legislation, guidance and codes of practice except where this fails to meet legislation in country. Security procedures and processes will be location specific to ensure that cultural, gender and equality issues are sensitively dealt with. The British Council aims to ensure that all staff and those who work with the British Council foster an attitude of good practice and cooperation in order to achieve good standards of security.

The British Council is committed to:

  • maintaining good practice and where we fall below this standard working towards achieving it through improvement in our security performance
  • monitoring and reviewing the systems and policy to ensure their suitability, adequacy and effectiveness
  • enabling our staff to comply with the British Council’s security standards
  • providing suitable and sufficient information, instruction, training and facilities to ensure all staff are aware of and equipped to carry out their security responsibilities competently
  • ensuring that those contracted to the British Council are aware of and satisfactorily discharge their security roles and responsibilities.

We will provide adequate and appropriate resources to implement this policy and will ensure it is communicated and understood.

The British Council will review this policy annually to reflect new legal and regulatory developments and ensure good practice.
