The bicentenary of Charles Dickens will fall on 2012. Dickens is the first writer to describe urban industrialization. As a precursor writer at that time, Dickens won public applause with his meticulous narrative style of critical realism, as well as the unique perspective focusing on the effect of urban sprawl towards human nature. His masterpieces have influenced later generations and are of great realistic values; especially his simple and straightforward narrative style, which has been widely accepted and developed in many kinds of art forms. In celebration of the bicentenary of Charles Dickens, the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy will hold series of cultural and educational activities from September 2011 to rediscover the deep influence of Charles Dickens towards daily life.

The series of cultural activities include:

  • Writing and photography competition: Our Times
