This month’s cubed investigates the development of a new crutch which could help sufferers recover from their injury more effectively. Professor Neil White, from the University's School of Electronics and Computer Science, liaised with physiotherapists and discovered how useful it would be if a patient knew exactly how much weight to bear on their injury. Using sensor technology, he began developing a crutch that could indicate this and also measures the actual movement of the crutches. As they develop the technology it could prove particularly beneficial to elderly patients who could be monitored in case they fall at home.
